Big Pit Mine | Blaenavon South Wales

In 1970s and 1980s a series of coal mining pits closed in the UK. Many towns and communities which were built around the pit had a damaging effect. Big Pit in Blaenavon South Wales closed in February 1980.

It was mid November when I did a 50 minute trip to Big Pit. It happened to be a chilly, foggy day. As the road lead up into the hills, the fog was becoming thicker, and the visibility became poorer. On the way I stopped a few times to capture the quiet yet depressing mood of the weather, as if it echoed the damaging effect of once prosperous mining area in South Wales.

The fog just barely revealed the layered landscape of the area. The golden brown plants reflected on the warm autumn that Britain experienced in 2018.

I did not realise that I was being watched.

The engine noise appears first, then the lights, then the car.

The fire tower creates a dominating sensation in the area.

Only the bright red numbers can just be barely seen through the fog. Additional lighting sources break through the fog.
